Paint out for August 8, 2026 - 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Elings Park

Upper level

The August paint out will be a second collaboration with the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden in recognition of their restoration project in Elings Park. We enjoyed a paint out with the garden last January. We will now be able to consider a summer setting. The project is located at the top of the park with new native plantings surrounded with awesome views from Hendry‘s Beach to the islands and of the mountains to the east. Find your muse at any of many sights to choose from.
If you still have a painting from this area bring it along for everyone to enjoy the various artists’ interpretations.
As is usual everyone is invited to attend the Scape paint outs. Friends of the Garden will join with us in painting, sketching, and photographing the surrounding views.
Directions:
Elings Park, 1298 La Positas Rd. 93105. Entering the Park drive to the top of the hill to the upper parking lot. From there, there is a trail to hike up to the restoration site at the top of the Park. We do not recommend this approach, except for vigorous hikers with not much to carry.
The alternative is to park in the residential area off of Flora Vista Drive. There will still be a walk from where you park to the site. Park either at the top of Calle Montilla, preferred, or if the area is full then at the end of Calle Andalucia. Both of these roads are off of Flora Vista Drive.
Coming from Santa Barbara, take W. Valerio St. until there is a sign of no outlet. At this point turn left onto Calle Canon to the top of the hill where it becomes Flora Vista Drive. The two roads mentioned above on which to park will be immediately on the west side of Flora Vista dr.
Coming from the Mesa, you will find Flora Vista Drive on the west end of Cliff Drive at a stop light going towards the north.
Best to consult GPS or a map if you can still find one.

All attendees are required to sign the Preserve’s waiver upon arrival. Please also read enclosed Visitor Information and Directions online atwww.sblandtrust.org. Donations to the Preserve are appreciated, though not necessary.

Called the “Jewel of the Gaviota Coast,” the 910-acre Arroyo Hondo Preserve is a magnificent canyon located west of Santa Barbara between Refugio State Beach and Gaviota State Park. The old ranch is rich in early California history and has an abundance of outstanding natural features.Within its steep canyon walls is a hidden place of extraordinary beauty and serenity. Cool, stream-side paths through the bay and sycamore trees transition into trails past ancient oak trees, tall yucca blooms and aromatic sages up the high ridges of the Santa Ynez Mountains.

Keep in mind, cell phone use in the Arroyo Hondo area is sketchy.

Directions to the Preserve

Traveling northbound on the U.S. Highway 101: The Preserve is about a 30-minute drive from downtown Santa Barbara. Approximately 4 miles past Refugio State Beach, you will see a blue “Rest Area in 7 miles” sign followed closely by a yellow warning sign about falling rocks. The entrance to Arroyo Hondo is in 1/2 mile and will be visible on the right at the bottom of the hill. Make a right-hand turn into the driveway. Come down the driveway, cross the bridge on the right and park near the barn.

Directions to return to U.S. Highway 101 southbound: From Arroyo Hondo, drive north 3.5 miles to exit at Mariposa Reina, then turn left at the stop sign. Turn left at the next stop sign to cross the bridge and take the on-ramp on the left to U.S. Highway 101 southbound.

Carpinteria Bluffs Preserve

The paint out for August will be at the Carpinteria Bluffs Preserves. This will be our last paint out before the September show at the Music Academy of the West to benefit Explore Ecology.

The Bluffs offer numerous awesome vantage points. There are expansive fields looking onto forested areas backed by mountains, many choices along the bluffs to the ocean, and on the beach itself.

Directions: from 101 take the Bailard exit towards the ocean to the stop sign. Then continue straight ahead crossing over Carpinteria Avenue into a parking lot provided for visiting the Bluffs. There is a map of the region available as you enter the trailhead.

Bathrooms are available with a short drive to the south along Carpinteria Ave to the next right turn at Viola Fields adjacent to the Bluffs.

Notice: There will be no paint out in September since we will be together at the show.

Within a mile past the tourist area in SOLVANG there’s a hidden natural gem

The area under and around the Alisal Bridge offers a wide range of views and paintable subjects.

I remiss not exploring this location until now. Many years ago this area was not accessible, and was happily surprised the great motifs that are not visible if just drive over them on the bridge.

The dry creek beds are just as interesting as the water ways. I’m repeating myself, but the subject’s numerous.

The entrance to the site is on the corners of Alisal Road and Fjord Drive.

Alisal Road is cross street of Hwy 246. From Buellton take a right turn, left turn from Santa Ynes, drive until you see the bridge and make a left turn to Fjord Drive.

JUNE Paint Out

More Mesa - Goleta

June 14, 2025, 9-12

One of our most precious properties along the ocean in Santa Barbara is More Mesa. A portion of the property is designated as a preserve. A large and the major ocean front portion is privately owned and recently back on the market. This of course raises the specter of development.

It might be desirable to have a community discussion as to whether there is substantial support for yet another fundraising blitz to preserve the property.

We will have the June paint out on the property, giving us the opportunity to have resonance with our experience in absorbing the ambience.There are ample rolling hills, grasslands, wooded areas, and of course, the magnificent cliffs and beach along the ocean.

Santa Barbara Mission Park

April 12th, 9:00 - 12:00, 2025

Is anything any longer sacred? Even the old Santa Barbara, mission is threatened by a proposal to build a large apartment building on the space adjacent.

So let’s go Saturday, April 5 to the Mission grounds and paint. There are many options, including the old Mission itself, charming houses along Plaza Rubio, the rose garden and the adjacent dairy open space.

If you are interested read the following and respond asap.
A Preregistration and payment of a fee of $15 per person is required and car pooling is encouraged.
The paint out for March 1 will be near Lake Casitas, off of Route 150. It takes 50-60 minutes from SB.
The Taft Gardens and Nature Preserve is 252 acres of native California open space with a large Mediterranean garden filled with impressive South African and Australian plants. The setting is in a wide canyon with meadows, the garden area, a year-round creek and pond and mountains with large sandstone slabs further up the canyon. Even the drive is beautiful including the jaunt up the driveway off of Rt.150. If you haven’t visited Taft Gardens you will be rewarded for the effort. This is an opportunity to enjoy.
Bring your walking shoes if you are interested in looking around which can take up the hours that we will be there in itself.
So go to the website Taftgardens.org and enjoy the offerings and the photos and then register to join us on the 1st.
The Gardens has limited permits for visitors and traffic due to the sensitive natural environs. Carpooling is recommended.
Upon arrival please sign the waiver for the Gardens and for Scape.

REGISTRATION: you will need to send me, Jerry Martin, j.p.martin@cox.net, no later than February 26; 1) Your name, 2) Your Email, and 3) $15 by either cash or check made out to SCAPE.

I will then send the Garden this information. You will then receive back an email with a code to the entrance gate and explicit directions to the Gardens.

THE JOY OF SCAPE PAINT OUTS

One of the great perks of being in SCAPE is having monthly collegial paint outs with like-minded nice people. If you haven't been to one, you will be hooked once you do! It is always fun to paint in new and interesting locations of urban-scapes, landscapes and seascapes. We meet at a location of scenic beauty often chosen in conjunction with an upcoming show. Whether you are experienced with plein air painting, interested in taking photographs or perhaps drawing for use in the studio later, or just want to share being in natural settings with others, it is worth checking out.

We have enjoyed gathering at Naples with ocean bluffs, agricultural land and mountains; a private organic farm in the Santa Ynez Valley near Buellton; Lake Carneros; an historic adobe and farm on the Gaviota coast, Arroyo Hondo Preserve; and a hilltop avocado ranch in the foothills. We like to explore new venues, classic locations, and beautiful sights.

There are certain paint outs that require a reservation as they are being held on private land or lands managed by one of our beneficiaries such as EDC: Coal Oil Point, Sedgwick, Salt Marsh.

As a SCAPE member if you have access or live in a spot that offers an enticing view and would accommodate around a dozen painters to set up, please contact Filiberto Lomeli or Jerry Martin. We would all much appreciate new ideas and new locations. Join Us!

REMINDERS WHEN ATTENDING PAINT OUTS

Release of Liability:

Please remember to always sign the Release of Liability at a Paint Out. Look for Jerry, Fred or Fil, or whoever else may be in charge of the Paint Out.

What to Bring

Bring sunscreen, a hat, maybe an umbrella, and a water bottle so that you can stay comfortable and hydrated throughout the day.
