                                                                   Featured Artists

                                                            Carol Talley  _  SEPT 182025

Please use the link and the pass code below to access the recording of the terrific demo and interview from September 18th with Carol Talley.  Carol is both an exceptional artist AND teacher and we so enjoyed our time with her.  I will also say that even if you are not a pastel painter, there is so much information here that will be of value to all artists.

A note of apology, though, to Carol and all of you in regard to the visual quality of the recording:  Though this was not visible to me (Susan Powell, Fred’s wife) during the Zoom session, the quality of the recording itself could certainly be better.  This hasn’t happened before, but you can bet I’ll be studying up on how to make improvements in the future. (One last excuse—I’m still pretty new at this!)

Finished Demo Painting

Carol Talley paints in a variety of mediums, for this occasion, she demonstrated her talents as a pastelist, the first such demo in the SCAPE Artists on Zoom series. Because I cannot improve on Carol’s own poetic words from her bio on her website (https://caroltalley.com/about),  I am including them here:

"I am currently exploring abstracted landscapes to evoke the sense of both the familiar and mysterious. Working from a background of a more realistic interpretation of place, I’m expanding into emphasizing color, texture and atmosphere to access the depth of emotional response to location.

My greatest joy is to connect with the viewer by creating paintings that express the ineffable and transcendent.

My art-making journey started young:  drawing on the walls of my house with a crayon, imitating Harold and his purple crayon, and getting scolded for it. Undaunted, I continued exploring mark making while growing up, finding my deepest connection to the world through art."

"Besides studying art at UC Santa Cruz, I’ve worked with Albert Handell, Kim Lordier, Terri Ford and Debora Stewart.

Collectors of my paintings include the Casa Barranca Retreat Center, Ojai, CA, The Tynan Group, Santa Barbara, CA and actor John Cleese. "

ARTISTS ON ZOOM

3:00 pm on Thursday, April 17

Featured Artist - Filiberto Lomeli

We are excited to announce that our own Filiberto Lomeli will be the featured artist in our next episode of Artists on Zoom.  Because Fil is a true plein air painter, this Zoom session will be filmed outdoors at 3:00 pm on Thursday, April 17.  (Many thanks to Jerry Martin for once again offering his beautiful home and outdoor space for this event.)

Filiberto paints landscapes and figures in acrylic.  He sometimes paints at night, a specialty he shares with his teacher Thomas Van Stein. He has also studied with Micheal Drury and further includes among his influences Ray Strong.  He has an AA degree in art from SBCC where he spent a semester in London, Florence and Paris studying art and art history.

As most of you know, Filiberto has been a board member of SCAPE from it’s inception.  He is in charge of setting up the shows, and is a genius at lighting and displaying paintings to their utmost advantage.

We hope you can join us for what promises to be an exceptional conversation and demo with our beloved and talented Filiberto Lomeli.  (A recording will be made available for those who are unable to attend live

SCAPE artist Matt Lancaster will give an in-person talk for SCAPE members,

"How I use social media - and you can too"

Thursday, February 20, 4:30-5:30 to PM.

The location is Shoreline Condominiums., 66 Barranca Ave., Santa Barbara.

This is an in-person presentation for SCAPE members. Spaces are limited, so please reserve a spot with an RSVP to Meg Ricks BY FEB. 17. Two ways to reserve your place:

1. SCAPE website under the EVENTS section with online registration for members who sign in.

2. text 805 729 4620 or email: margaretricks@gmail.com

"Matthew Lancaster currently resides in Santa Barbara, CA . He enjoys painting and drawing; typically he paints with oils or watercolors, and draws with inks. He prefers painting outdoors, capturing the amazing city scapes and landscapes. He has developed a love for the historical impressionist, and their contemporary counterparts, resulting in his impressionistic style".

PLEASE BRING A PEN AND SOMETHING TO WRITE ON.

Additional directions will be sent to registered participants one week before the presentation.

SCAPE Artists on Zoom

Manny Lopez

~Recording now available ~

Below please find a link to the recording for the January 29, 2025 Artists on Zoom demo with the illustrious Manny Lopez.  This is the first one done outside with a model, so it is novel in those respects.  Manny quietly focuses on his work while he’s painting, so there isn’t too much talking until the end.  (We didn’t want you to think that there is something wrong with the sound.)

Enjoy!   Fred and Susan Powell

He speaks eloquently about the process of landscape painting:

“In my paintings I seek to express the sublime beauty that is in nature. I think my best work has been those paintings where the inspiration has led me to capture a little of the life that I think we all see before us, obvious yet elusive.”  Manny Lopez

About Manny Lopez:

Manny has been an Oak Group Member since 1986 and has participated annually in their shows that benefit land preservation.  In addition, he has also managed Gallery 113 for many years.  In his other lives, Manny has worked as an engineer, finish carpenter and farmer.  In his “spare" time, he makes guitars, and as an added bonus to our workshop, he has offered to speak a bit about that process as well.
