Message from our PRESIDENT
By Kathy McGill
Ladies and Gentlemen, it’s Showtime! I’m delighted to report that we have finalized our fall show, and it’s coming up fast. We will be back at the beautiful Music Academy of the West on September 13-14. The show is being held on Friday and Saturday this year. Aside from that, the format will be much the same as it has been the last two years.
I’m thrilled to announce that our beneficiary for the show will be Explore Ecology. Explore Ecology is an environmental education nonprofit that has been active in Santa Barbara County for over 34 years. I’m sure many of you are familiar with them, as they run the much beloved “Art from Scrap” Creative Reuse store at the corner Garden and Cota Streets. Their other programs include Environmental Education in classrooms and on field trips throughout the County, and a robust School Gardens program at over 30 schools.
In their own words, Explore Ecology “empowers our community to protect and preserve the planet with innovative environmental education and nature-based learning. We educate over 30,000 children a year, inspiring them to engage with the natural world, think critically, and experience the value of environmental stewardship.”
The theme for this year’s show is “Central Coast Reflections”. The theme is intentionally broad in order to honor the great diversity of our natural world, as well as our diversity as painters. Explore Ecology is especially interested in coastal scenes, since much of their work has a coastal focus, but you are free to let your paintbrush wander where it will.
Karen Glancy is busy putting the prospectus together, and it will be out very soon. You will find more details in the Exhibit section of this newsletter.
For those who want to know more about the great work Explore Ecology does, here are links to their website and to their 2024 impact report:

Happy painting!
Kathy
Good News! We have secured a fall show, no small feat in this post Covid world.
Look for the prospectus at Online Juried Shows soon!
"Central Coast Reflections", Sept 13-14, 2024
This show will feature reflections of the artist on the ecology of Santa Barbara County. It includes landscapes, seascapes, fresh water and people, animals, and buildings.
Make sure to down load the prospectus so you have the important dates and information of the show.
A few things to remember that were a small problem during recent shows.
YOU put your card into the attachable pocket - make sure it gets on the correct painting. It goes on the lower left of the painting back. When turned around to face the painting it is on the right.
Prices and titles cannot be changed once the entries close, but you can change them by going into online juried shows, in your account, before the close of the entry deadline
Paintings will be checked in at the start and checked out at the end the exhibit, with one exit point .
This information will be repeated for you closer to the show.

Save the Date! Paint, Picnic and Hangout August 3rd at Shoreline Park!
SCAPE will be hosting a very informal "pop-up hangout and paintout" at Shoreline Park on August 3rd from 1 pm to 4 pm.
Lisa La Mer has kindly volunteered to host this event, and SCAPE will be providing water (still and fizzy) and some simple bagged snacks. You bring your paints, whatever else you want to eat, and your best summer smile! If you want to bring something to share that's great, but it's totally up to you. RSVP's are appreciated, but not necessary. The idea is to get together in a very relaxed setting and share good company. Painting is strictly optional, especially if you're in your fiesta finery! We hope to see you there.

A celebration of life is being planned.
John was such a generous and gracious soul. His paintings are so free and fresh.

John Rindlaub, besides being a gifted award winning artist, was a valued SCAPE member. His quiet demeanor often hid his quick wit and sense of humor that he displayed while setting up and/or talking down many SCAPE shows over the years.
This past year he expressed to his care health takers how much he valued his experience as a long-time member of SCAPE and he wanted to continue painting. In the last few months, his great health takers brought him on Thursday mornings to Oak Park to sketch and paint with us. It was a joy to have him join us, even for those few months. He seemed to have enjoyed painting with us as well.

We are pleased to announce our second session of SCAPE Artists on Zoom (working title—we are open to suggestions), and ask that you save the date if you wish to attend live (for those who can’t attend live, a link will be sent to you all after the event).
Nina Warner, landscape and figure painter, has graciously agreed to an interview and demo on Thursday, July 18, 2024 at 5:00 pm from her studio. Ms. Warner has exhibited her work widely in the Santa Barbara area, and taught at SBCC full time for 25 years. After retiring in 2012, her time has been devoted to plein air paining, drawing and print making. Please join us using the Zoom link below, for what promises to be an enlightening and enjoyable time together. Thank you, Nina Warner!
