SCAPE Newsletter - August 2024

Message from our PRESIDENT

By Kathy McGill

I’d like to open this month’s newsletter with a huge shout-out and thank-you to Nina Warner, Fred Powell and Susan Powell for hosting our second successful virtual workshop/demo.  Once again, Fred and Susan did a fabulous job MC’ing and running the event.  And not surprisingly, Nina knocked it out of the park.  She was clear, articulate, and her painting process was fun and instructive to watch.  I am really looking forward to the next installment!

Our September show at the Music Academy is rapidly approaching.   The show is open for entries at oninejuriedshows.com.  Entries close September 1, so get your paintings ready!  Please see the show section below for more details.

I’m happy to announce that the juror for the show will be Tom Henderson.  Many of you know Tom, as he is a long time fixture of the Santa Barbara area art community, and a member of the Oak Group.  He is known for his loose and expressive watercolors and oils, and will no doubt bring a unique and valuable perspective to the show.

Thank-you to everyone who submitted images to help publicize the show.  They are all beautiful works that showcase our membership well.  Over the next few days we will be working with our beneficiary, Explore Ecology (Exploreecology.org), to build copy and graphics to publicize the show.  As many of you know, these shows are getting increasingly difficult to mount, as costs are rising across the board.  YOU can help make the show a success and ensure future shows by entering your work, and by helping to publicize the show through all your networking channels.  And of course, we will need plenty of volunteers from now through to the end of the show. We will be reaching out for help in the coming days and weeks.  Please say yes and make your show a success!

Finally, don’t forget our picnic from 1 - 4 pm, Saturday, August 3rd at the Shoreline Park picnic area.  A special thank-you to Lisa La Mer for organizing this event.  This year's picnic is a very informal affair:  you can paint or not as you see fit.  We’ll provide non-alcoholic beverages and some very light snacks (chips).  Please bring whatever else you want to eat or drink.  If you want to bring something to share, that will be welcome, but it’s not necessary.  And of course, friends and family are welcome to join us!  We are aiming for nothing more (or less) than to share friendship, community and laughter.  Lisa and  I hope to see you there.

Happy painting,

Kathy

August Paint Out

Haskell's Beach

8301 Hollister Ave, Goleta CA 93117

Saturday August 10,   9 - 12

Haskell’s  Beach is at the south end of the Bacara Hotel at the outlet of Tecolote Creek.  There is a public access and parking area for the public.  At high tide the beach is narrow but lower tides allow walking long distances to the south past Sandpiper Golf Course and north to Naples Point.  The tide on the 10th will be low at 7 AM and High at 2 PM.  If you want an extended walk and exploration then come early but the beach will accommodate all of us for the morning.

Directions:  To get to Haskell's Beach, exit the 101 at Winchester Canyon Road and continue straight to a stop sign at Cathedral Oaks Rd.  Turn left crossing over the 101 toward the ocean. Turn right at the next stop onto  Hollister and head towards the Bacara Resort. Look for signs indicating beach access. Park in the tennis court facility for the Bacara and follow the paths to the beach.

Membership Report

By Cezanne Totton

Behind the Scenes

This month I am encouraging everyone who hasn't renewed membership, to please renew. Currently, there are 66 overdue renewals. SCAPE needs everyone who is interested in being a SCAPE member, to renew.

Even though most SCAPE duties are done by volunteers, there are business expenses that most members may not realize are necessary for SCAPE to remain vital. The expenses include storage rental, insurance costs, bookkeeping, website charges, information/rack cards, annual picnic, the cost of shows and, from time to time, major items such as lighting and special opportunities for members. The cost of shows includes: venue rental, show awards, juror fee, reception food, signage, online juried fee, publicity, photography, and specific insurance.

Thank you to all who have already renewed and I'm looking forward to seeing more renewals!

Reminder!

SCAPE Picnic on Saturday, August 3rd at Shoreline Park, 1 - 4

Shoreline View

SCAPE will be hosting a very informal "pop-up hangout and paintout" at Shoreline Park on August 3rd from 1 pm to 4 pm.

Lisa La Mer has kindly volunteered to host this event, and SCAPE will be providing water (still and fizzy) and some simple bagged snacks.  You bring your paints, whatever else you want to eat, and your best summer smile!  If you want to bring something to share that's great, but it's totally up to you.  RSVP's are appreciated, but not necessary.  The idea is to get together in a very relaxed setting and share good company.  Painting is strictly optional, especially if you're in your fiesta finery!  We hope to see you there.

Hello there,

Stop Development of Naples - Save the Gaviota Coast

Development of this plot of land on the Gaviota coast would open the floodgates for the development of other remaining properties.

I plan on attending the hearing on Friday, August 9th to voice my opposition to this development.

I believe the more of us who can at least email in our protest, or show up in person, the better.

Thanks for considering this,

Myla

Dear Myla,

Right now, Santa Barbara County is poised to approve the first of what could be 71 large, fenced estates at Naples on the Gaviota Coast, just west of Goleta. Approval would set a precedent for development of the whole Gaviota Coast. Naples is the crown jewel of the Gaviota Coast, one of Southern California’s largest remaining continues stretches of undeveloped rural coastline with significant ecological importance. Please join the Environmental Defense Center and Surfrider Foundation to help ensure this project does not move forward. Attend the hearing (in person or virtually) on August 5th to lend your voice, or submit comments today.

SUBMIT COMMENTS BY 8/2 at noon

The County planners have released a report claiming developing a 6,500 square foot estate with a 2,000 square foot barn, guest house, driveway, and three septic leach fields on Lot 66 of  the undeveloped Naples bluff will not significantly impact the environment.

However, the proposed development site is home to as many as fifteen rare wildlife species, including white-tailed kites – a state designated Fully Protected Species - which forage on the project site. These species and their habitats are protected by the Gaviota Coast Plan.

Please join EDC and Surfrider Foundation to make sure the County protects Naples and the Gaviota Coast! We need your voice today.

  • Email comments by August 2, 2024 at noon:
    Zoning Administrator, Jonathan Martin, martinj@countyofsb.org

  • Attend the Public hearing on August 5 at 9:00 am*
    123 E. Anapamu Street
    Planning Commission Hearing Room
    *Call 805-568-2000 for updated time.

Suggested talking points for your consideration:

  • The Naples Lot 66 Estate development must be denied because it is planned within protected sensitive habitat. Approval would be inconsistent with the Gaviota Coast Plan’s mandatory habitat protection.
  • The Habitat Restoration Plan is deficient for omitting Lot 69 and white-tailed kite foraging habitat.
  • The wetland delineation is too old and was undertaken during an historic drought and is invalid.
  • I urge the Zoning Administrator to deny the estate or prepare a subsequent environmental impact report.
  • In addition, please raise any personal concerns or opinions that you have about why this issue and Naples area is important to you.

Thank you for taking action to protect Naples and Gaviota!
