Message from our PRESIDENT

By Kathy McGill

Greetings painters,

As SCAPE’s fall show fades into memory, I have been reflecting on the many ways this show felt special.  First of all, the overall quality of the art was a standout.  I’ve lost count of how many people came up to me and told me how impressed they were by the body of work we had on display.  We had a great turnout, particularly on Friday night, and in my opinion the atmosphere was energized and fun.  And very importantly, we generated more than $4000 for our beneficiary, Explore Ecology.  Once again, a huge thank-you to everyone who worked so hard and contributed so much to the show’s successes.  We couldn’t have done it without the “SCAPE Village” coming out in full force.

But it’s not all good news, unfortunately.  While we mounted a show we can all be proud of  and had decent sales, the SCAPE organization will lose money overall.  The reason for this is very straightforward:  venue costs and catering costs have gotten very high - making it almost impossible to break even.  Personally, I think shows like the one we just had are part of what makes SCAPE special, and I hate the thought of giving up on them.  The reality is, however, that SCAPE will need to develop additional sources of revenue or to make changes to our model in order to mount these shows and survive in the mid to long term.

I personally believe there must be ways to solve this solvency problem and to build on everything that is good about SCAPE.  But for SCAPE to survive and thrive we need people to step up and volunteer for leadership positions in the organization.  We’ve had some successes with recruiting, but several critical positions remain unfilled, including a backfill for me, a Vice President, Assistant Secretary, and an overall Publicity Chair.  With more people participating, I’m convinced we can not only lighten the load on our long term volunteers, I believe we can build an organization that can be sustained into the future.

Happy painting,

Kathy

PAINT OUT NEWS

By your Paint Out Team

Paint Out  - Saturday, October 12, 9:00 am -12:00 pm

Goleta Beach Park

We will return to an oldie and goodie. Plan to meet at the East End of the parking lot near the restaurant, which is currently closed. The extended parking lot beyond is also closed for renovation. Park near the restaurant and then walk along the creek outlet or the ocean. At the end of the closed parking lot there is a beach access for those who desire. Along the way there are many painting spots available. You will find that the “gap” has widen by fallen trees. Iconic views persist.

Directions: when entering Goleta beach Park turn to the left and go to the end. Park to look around and then perhaps walk to the end of the closed lot where there is beach access.

Notice:  we will try out a new program for everyone who is interested. By the last Saturday in each month, if you send me a cropped photo of the painting from that months paint out, I will send them along with the next month announcement to be published in the newsletter.

ARTIST WORKSHOP ON ZOOM - SAVE THE DATE

Meg Ricks has graciously agreed to be our next SCAPE artist in our Zoom series coming up on October 17, 2024 at 5:00 pm.  As many of you know, Meg is an award winning artist who is a member of many art organizations in addition to SCAPE.  She is known for abstracted and expressive landscapes.  A graduate of Barnard College, Columbia University, she has pursued a life-long interest in art history and creative artwork along with a career in developmental and clinical psychology.  In addition, her great-grandfather began the first organization that preserved private land for future generations—The Boston based Trustees of Reservations, and she has been involved in saving open space much of her life.

Per Meg,  "This tree and its darkened track down the cliff to the sea entertained my eyes while backstroking on the return trip across a bay. Still a WIP."

Our meeting will consist of an interview followed by a demo.  If you wish to join us live, you can do so by using the Zoom link below.  For those who cannot attend live, a link to the recording will be sent out after the meeting.  Either way, we hope you can join us for what promises to be a quality time spent with our own terrific artist and very nice person, Meg Ricks.
